Caller IDs and how a number is verified

Request a caller ID, see how it is proved and approved, and choose what outgoing calls show.

Last checked For: Administrators

Steps

  1. Know the rule

An outgoing call shows a number only if that number is verified and belongs to your desk. Otherwise the call is withheld and the person called sees no number. Caller IDs are not rotated or borrowed, and there is no way to show a number that has not been verified.

  2. Open Caller IDs

Choose Caller IDs in the menu. The page lists your numbers with how each is proved, its evidence and its status: Pending, Verified or Rejected.

  3. Request a caller ID

In Request a caller ID, enter the Number (international format) and a label. Under How it is proved, choose Number held from a supplier or Document. In Evidence, give the supplier and order reference, or the document (a port-in letter, a bill) that an administrator has checked. Choose Request.

  4. Wait for approval

The request stays pending until an administrator chooses Approve. A rejected request shows the reason given with Reject.

  5. Prove a number by a call

A number proved by a Verification call needs no approval: it is confirmed by the code read out on the call to the number. For numbers of your own, use Call to verify on the Numbers page.

  6. Choose what calls show

In Default caller ID for outgoing calls, choose each phone line's own setting, Withheld, or one of your verified numbers, then choose Save default. Apply the change on the Phone lines page.

Good to know

  • If a phone line or the default names a number that is not verified, the change to the phone system is refused with a message saying so. Verify the number, or set the caller ID to withheld.
  • A number only appears in the choices once it is verified.
